YES Visiting Students
(Virtual) The Breastfeeding and Lactation course is being hosted by Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and the Sparrow-MSU Family Medicine Residency Program. This course details the relevant anatomy, physiology, and common problems related to lactation and infant breastfeeding. Students will learn how to assess infant weight gain, milk transfer, and appropriate latch, and manage medical problems that can arise in the context of lactation. Students who successfully complete the course will have met all requirements to apply to become Certified Lactation Counselors.
Students will complete asynchronous learning activities using a variety of modalities, including reading, videos, online workshops and lectures, virtual standardized patients , and online quizzes. Students will also be required to participate in scheduled online small group discussions. Students will need a computer with high-speed internet and a working camera. Enrolled students will be required to pay $120 for access to interactive online course materials the week prior to rotation. Although the course is virtual, it is a full-time course that is expected to take approximately 40 hours/week.
Students interested in any specialty are welcome, but the course will be particularly useful for students with an interest in Family Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, or Pediatrics.
