Student Essay Prize: Submissions for the 2020 Student Essay Prize are now open.

The small grants programme offers early career researchers and global health professionals based anywhere in the world the opportunity to apply for funding in a topic related to tropical medicine and global health.

The programme funds projects across the research spectrum, including lab-based, clinical, implementation and policy-related research.

The aim of the programme is to develop the next generation of global health researchers by providing seed funding to enable them to generate preliminary data to secure follow-on grants and further their career.

Applications focused on the thematic areas listed in RSTMH’s five-year strategy will be prioritised.

These are listed below:

  • Neglected tropical diseases, with a particular focus on their overlap with non-communicable diseases and the Sustainable Development Goals
  • Malaria, with a particular focus on drug resistance
  • One Health and wider planetary health
  • The consideration of human health alongside animal health and the environment, in the context of social, economic and political factors
  • Topical issues including, but not limited to, emerging diseases
  • Drug resistant infections

We are also interested to see applications related to snakebite, mycetoma and other skin NTDs and other deep mycoses, co-morbidity and NCDs, coronavirus and emerging diseases.

The maximum RSTMH small grant awarded is £5,000 (including VAT) and for up to one year in duration.

Who is eligible?

Anyone in their early career from any nationality based anywhere in the world can apply.

Only RSTMH members can receive the funding.

If successful, applicants who are not already members will be asked to join the Society.

What do you define as “early career”?

We would like to ensure as many early career researchers and professionals can apply for a small grant as possible, and we encourage people from a range of disciplines and sectors to apply.

To ensure equity and fairness of opportunity, RSTMH prefer to be as inclusive as possible in regard to suitable applicants.

Rather than a definition focused on specific roles or qualifications held, we choose to provide guidance around the profile of applicant that may be suitable for a small grant. Applicants should meet this profile and should not have received funding in their name for this field of study.

The applicant’s supervisor must verify this as part of the reference and application process.

We expect applicants to be able to:

  • Carry out research under supervision
  • Have the ambition to develop knowledge of research methodologies and discipline
  • Have demonstrated a good understanding of a field of study
  • Demonstrate the ability to produce data under supervision
  • Use critical analysis, evaluation and be able to synthesise new and complex ideas
  • Competently explain the outcome of their research and value thereof to colleagues
  • Not in a position to lead an independent research programme

Applying for funding

All applications must be submitted via the Submittable online grants management system and in English.

Please follow the instructions carefully to complete and submit an application.

The application deadline is 17:00 GMT on 15 April 2021.

No complete applications (including references) will be accepted after the deadline.

Applicants should allow enough time after submission of their application before the deadline to ensure the required references are obtained and submitted.
